MEDIA RELEASE: Creative Spaces Capsule Project
Picture an exhibition that is more than the sum of its parts. An event that sweeps the length of the country, growing larger with each space it occupies. Until eventually, a national collection has amassed to be treasured and shared. This is the Creative Spaces Capsule Project, a cumulative, interactive exhibition between creative spaces around New Zealand.
Launching this month, the Creative Spaces Capsule Project aims to connect creative spaces across New Zealand with an exhibition that grows as it travels around the country.
Commencing at C.S Arts in Invercargill on 10 July, the Capsule Project began with just one artwork. The "capsule" of work will make its way to the far corners of Aotearoa, gathering artwork from each creative space that hosts it and will finish with a flourish through the main centres as a full body of work in February and March 2017.
The Capsule Project was conceived at Arts Access Aotearoa’s national Creative Spaces 2020 conference, held in April 2016, which brought together creative spaces from all around New Zealand in April 2016. Benton Glassey from Dunedin’s Studio 2 and Margaret Freeman Gallery and Menno Huibers of Pablos Art Studios in Wellington are the "Capsule Cosmonauts" leading the project.
Benton Glassey says the goals of the Capsule Project are to celebrate diversity, showcase some great New Zealand artwork and educate local communities about creative spaces in their area.
“Creative spaces are organisations where people can make art and participate in artistic activities,” Benton explains. “They provide space, resources, and assistance in ways that will lead to self-expression, empowerment and self-development.”
“We are excited to launch this cumulative project, which will link up these spaces from around the country, and eventually create a collaborative exhibition that will represent the range of people that use these creative spaces.”
It is intended that the artists and each community collaboratively decide which piece of artwork will be added to the capsule. The creative spaces involved, along with the public, will be able to follow the progress of the exhibition and interact with it via social media.
The Creative Capsule Project will culminate in a completed exhibition in Auckland in January 2017 before it's exhibited in both Wellington and Dunedin Fringe Festivals.
