Case study: Fortune Theatre and its audio described performances

Lara Macgregor, Artistic Director at Dunedin’s Fortune Theatre, says presenting six audio-described performances during its 2012 season has widened their reach into the community.

“Making it as easy as possible for our community to connect with us is vitally important to ensure ongoing growth of our audiences,” she says.

“We jumped at the opportunity when Anna Henare from the Experience Access Charitable Trust approached us in 2011 to see if we were interested in hosting audio described shows at the theatre.

“We wanted to provide the service so that our vision impaired patrons could engage with us – and with our productions – in a way that hasn’t been possible in the theatre’s 40-year history.”

All aspects of the project exceeded their expectations and feedback from patrons was overwhelmingly positive.

In this case study, Lara talks to Arts Access Aotearoa about the challenges they overcame to present the audio-described performances that she hopes will become a normal part of the theatre’s programme.
