A collage of four images of tutor Moana Harrison with participants weaving tukutuku and harakeke basketsThanks to funding through Manatū Taonga’s CARE Fund, Artists in the Making is blessed to have artist and master weaver Moana Harrison (Ngāti Porou ki Harataunga) working with Coromandel Town participants of Te Mana Tangata programme.
Artists in the Making is a creative space run under the auspices of the Coromandel Independent Living Trust, and active in Whitianga and Coromandel Town. Te Mana Tangata is one of the trust’s longest running and most successful programmes. Its open-door policy and safe whānau environment mean that people in our community feel welcome to come when they’re needing support and compassion.
With the three-year Manatū Taonga funding, Artists in the Making was able to take arts programmes to Coromandel Town. The response has been great. An average of 10 to 15 people attend the art sessions, held twice a week.
Employing our talented local artists as tutors, we’ve run several ceramics and screenprinting workshops. This latest workshop with Moana, pictured right, is focused on raranga (weaving) and tukutuku (woven latticework panels).

At the moment, our group is busy weaving mats, kono (baskets), kete waikawa (large woven baskets) and kupenga (netting). We’re also learning the traditional art of weaving tukutuku.
We’ve been learning about the 12 universal patterns of tukutuku and creating tukutuku designs that will represent Te Mana Tangata, its people and the community.
Moana refers to our group as Te Whānau-a-Ringa Kakama – family of fast hands. When participants were asked what they most valued about this project, one responded: "People. We all support each other on this learning journey together.”
