Regional Arts in Corrections networks

The prisons are located in four regions and Arts Access Aotearoa has established networks within three of these regions. The networks include Corrections staff and volunteers, Community Corrections staff, artists and writers, academics, and people in the wider community interested in arts and social justice.

Network updates

Network meeting in Christchurch

An Arts in Corrections Network meeting in Christchurch, facilitated by Arts Access Aotearoa, will be held on Monday 2 December at Ara Institute of Canterbury. This is a chance for people involved in the Arts in Corrections sector to discuss and workshop ideas around best practice and facilitation. Artists and theatre makers from the community are also invited. Why the arts shouldn’t just be a luxury in prison

"International evidence is crystal clear on the impact of the arts in prisons and youth justice settings," writes Professor Peter O'Connor in a blog about Arts in Corrections and the impact of the Arts in Corrections Network. "Recidivism rates drop, violent incidents in prisons decrease and many prisoners learn skills that transfer well in their transition back into the outside world. And the arts are comparatively cheap for all they can achieve." Read more

The Arts in Corrections Lower North Island Network meeting, held in Wellington in April 2018, featured a presentation by Sylvie Frigon, Professor of Criminology at the University of Ottawa, who was on sabbatical at the University of Victoria in Wellington as a visiting scholar in its Institute of Criminology.
