Circa Theatre and Te Papa are excited to present an audio described afternoon on Sunday 20 May.

Te Papa will host a Sensory Art Tour at 2pm, Tangata o le Moana, a sensory tour through the Te Papa exhibition that tells the story of Pacific people, past and present.

Following that event, Circa Theatre will present a touch tour at 3.45pm and an audio described performance at 4.30pm of the award-winning Pasifika play touring New Zealand, Still Life with Chickens.

We are offering a special price of $33 for Still Life with Chickens to all members and guests of Blind Citizens New Zealand and the Blind Foundation. The Te papa tour will be an additional $10 to be paid on the day at the Te papa Information desk.

Audio description is a narrated commentary for blind and low vision patrons that describes what’s happening on stage in between the dialogue or songs: for example, new scenes, settings, costume, body language, facial expression, movements across the stage and sight gags. An audio describer talks into a microphone to provide the commentary. This is transmitted to wireless receivers and headsets worn by the audience members. In 2017 we acquired a silencer for our describer to use to ensure that the Audio description would not affect hearing members of the audience.

Still Life with Chickens

When Mama discovers a mischievous chicken invading her flourishing veggie garden her first instinct is to reach for the spade. But what starts out as a skirmish over the silverbeet develops into an unlikely friendship. Award-winning playwright D.F. Mamea’s slice-of-life story paints a vivid portrait of the local neighbourhood, its colourful characters, and Mama’s dreams for herself and her family. Goretti Chadwick (Pani and Pani) gives a tour-de-force performance as she brings this glorious character to life.

The Te Papa Tour begins at 2pm and we will meet in the Te Papa foyer by the large rolling ball. The touch tour begins at 3.45pm and the audio described performance at 4.30pm.

To book tickets for Still Life with Chickens please call the Circa Box Office on 04 801 7992 or visit in person at 1 Taranaki Street.
