Nau mai, haere mai. You are warmly invited to a ritual for the whole whānau to mark the arrival of Matariki, the Māori New Year, at Te Papa. Join us for the lighting of a ritual fire, listen to stories of renewal, and celebrate the start of a new year.

This event will be New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) interpreted and audio described. Headsets will be available.

The ritual will also mark the beginning of the Matariki Rising Festival at Te Papa, 15–24 June 2018.

During the evening, we:

  • celebrate the people (tangata), and earth, sea, and sky (whenua)
  • mark the beginning of Matariki
  • hear stories of renewal.

Red Gates bar will be open for drinks and food and there will be free soup and rolls to enjoy.

Please bring small tokens of who you are, of your loved ones who you wish to farewell and your hopes and dreams for the year to come – and a blanket and pillow!
