Play Space Productions is creating an exciting performance with blind and visually impaired audience members especially in mind. Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood, a play for voices, will be staged at the Pegasus Arms on Oxford Terrace in Christchurch on 19 and 20 February.

Originally a radio play, director Kat Forrester wants to present Under Milk Wood with a particularly auditory focus. The piece will be performed by a cast of thirteen, with voices through microphones & soundscapes painting a picture of Llareggub (the Welsh fantasy town in which the play is set) and it’s residents in the audience's minds. ‘The language Thomas uses creates the most vivid visual narrative- it's quite transportive- and our strong cast will deliver this well. I want the audience to be able to listen to this play and be taken right into the town-into the Sailors Arms and see the story play out in their mind's eye.’

Play Space Productions welcomes all to this performance, but would love to host members of the blind and visually impaired community especially, ‘These audience members are really hungry for quality theatre and accessible shows that companies like Showbiz and The Court Theatre run*.’ Play Space Productions Co-director, Georgie Sivier says. We wanted to see more opportunities for everyone to enjoy theatre, so when Kat brought Under Milk Wood to the table it was perfect!’

The performance will be in the upstairs room at Pegasus Arms, to aid audience members there will be extra ushers stationed at the bottom of the stairs for ease of access. Please note there is no lift unfortunately but there is a secondary stairway that is wider and has a handrail. The accessible toilet is downstairs. Service dogs are welcomed to this event. There will be a touch tour and venue tour (including introductory notes) before the performance at 7pm. Thank you to Audio Described Aotearoa for their assistance with this.

We welcome one and all to the Pegasus Arms on the 18th, 19th & 20th February for a truly luxurious auditory theatre experience.
