Tim Bray Theatre Company accessibility resources

From 1991 to 2024, Tim Bray Theatre Company in Auckland was Aotearoa’s longest- running professional children’s theatre company. It was dedicated to inspiring audiences through the power of imagination by making theatre for children aged from three to ten, and their families and teachers.
Over those 33 years, Tim Bray Theatre Company created original stage shows for children. Dedicated to providing theatre that was accessible to all, it led the way for others in the arts sector to follow.
A legacy of accessibility in children’s theatre
In 2004, Tim Bray Theatre Company became the first theatre company in New Zealand to introduced New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) interpreted performances.
In 2015, the theatre company secured funding to provide audio described performances. And in 2019, Tim Bray Theatre Company added sensory relaxed performances to its accessibility initiatives.
Tim Bray Theatre Company provided these accessible performances for every show season from the inception of each initiative. Unfortunately, the company closed in 2024 due to the ill-health of its founder and Artistic Director, Tim Bray QSM, who passed away in July 2025.
Arts Access Aotearoa honours the legacy of this incredible company by preserving a record of some of its accessibility resources and practices.
Tim Bray wanted to share this work with everyone in Aotearoa working to increase accessibility, in the hope that all can learn from what was done so well for so many years.
