Creative Spaces Capsule Project

A cumulative and interactive exhibition, launched at C.S. Art in Invercargill in July 2016, will connect creative spaces as it orbits New Zealand. After exhibitions in Wellington and Dunedin in early 2017, the final landing will be back in Invercargill, where C.S Art will display the artworks collected through its journey.

The exhibition has collected artwork from artists who work from four creative spaces in the South Island, and is in the Wellington region over September and October before heading north as far as Auckland.

The Creative Spaces Capsule Project was born at Arts Access Aotearoa’s national conference, Creative Spaces 2020, held in April 2016 in Wellington. Benton Glassey, programme facilitator at Studio 2/Margaret Freeman Gallery, and Menno Huibers, art tutor at Pablo Art Studios, are the two cosmonauts leading the project.

“Nationally, creative spaces are doing very cool stuff and the idea of an art exchange came up as an opportunity to bring us together and also reach a wider community to show what we do,” Benton explains.

Benton and Menno want to encourage more communication between creative spaces so they can become stronger and more visible in their local communities. “By working together, we can see opportunities that otherwise we might miss,” Benton says. “We can show the community the amazing work that creative spaces are doing with all the people who use these spaces.”

The completed exhibition will also be displayed in both Wellington and Dunedin Fringe Festivals in early 2017.

Creative spaces and the public can follow the capsule’s journey and interact with it via social media.
