Join the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at the Dunedin Town Hall for a free relaxed concert designed for neurodivergent audiences and anyone who would feel more comfortable in a concert environment where noise and movement from the audience are okay.
Presented in collaboration with Autism NZ, this free concert features your national orchestra performing exciting music from Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Anthony Richie and Jessie Montgomery in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Hosted by NZSO animateur Chris Lam Sam, the concert includes a short Q&A with the orchestra during the performance. This will be followed by a meet and greet with some of the NZSO musicians at the end of the concert.
This performance from 11am to noon may also appeal to those who prefer attending events during daylight hours with easier access to public transport and a quieter atmosphere.
Please note: this concert is not suitable for children under five years of age.
Relaxed concerts are designed specifically for people from the neurodivergent, autism and disability communities. They have a relaxed attitude to noise and movement during the performance, minimal lighting effects, a 'chill-out' space and where possible, we ask that traditional applause from the audience is replaced by silent NZ Sign Language applause.
A printable PDF guide will be prepared for this performance with descriptions of what to expect at the concert to help you and your whānau to prepare.
While every effort is made to ensure this event is supportive of sensory needs, there are factors outside of our control, such as numbers of participants and audience noise levels.
This concert is presented in collaboration with Autism New Zealand.
