MEDIA RELEASE: Regent Theatre
The Regent Theatre Trust is pleased to announce that funds raised from the 2026 Regent Theatre 24 Hour Book Sale have been reinvested into two significant upgrades. These developments enhance the venue’s accessibility and technical capabilities, ensuring a superior theatre experience for the Dunedin community.
The Regent Theatre has made history as the first performing arts venue in the South Island to install Auracast™, a next-generation assistive listening technology.
Auracast™ delivers clear, real-time audio directly to patrons’ personal devices, providing a more inclusive and engaging environment for people who are hard of hearing.
“Providing access for Deaf and disabled artists and audiences alike is key,” says Richard Benge MNZM, Executive Director, Arts Access Aotearoa.
“We are pleased that Regent Theatre’s plans include accessibility on both sides of the stage. It’s a powerful step towards creating a truly equitable arts landscape.”
A major lighting overhaul
Alongside accessibility improvements, a major lighting overhaul has been completed. By leveraging industry partnerships, the Theatre has secured high-end LED equipment at a fraction of its original $200,000 cost.
The new system introduces full colour-mixing and adaptable configurations, significantly expanding the venue's ability to host complex touring productions and concerts while reducing power consumption.
“These upgrades strengthen what we can offer both performers and audiences,” says Regent Theatre Director Sarah Anderson. “They ensure the Regent remains a responsive, capable, flexible and accessible arts venue for years to come.”
The Trust is also looking towards the future, with the next planned upgrade involving the design and manufacture of a bespoke wheelchair access ramp to improve stage accessibility.
A cultural landmark in the Octagon since 1928, the Regent Theatre remains committed to strengthening Dunedin’s vibrant performing arts scene and is very grateful to its community for its ongoing support.
