Online hui programme
We have 10 online sessions, one each month February–November, to keep members from across Aotearoa connected and provide a space for learning, connection and sharing.
Three types of online hui:
- Monthly Meetups (regular connection and discussion)
- Webinars (experts presenting on specific topics)
- Guest Q&A sessions (asking Deaf and disabled arts professionals about their lived experience)
Accessibility: NZSL interpreters can be provided by request. Registration closes 7 days before each hui.
Upcoming online hui sessions
Wednesday 15 July, 1:00pm–2:00pm
Monthly Meetup: Mid-winter movie- Crip Camp
To beat the winter blues, let’s try something different- a movie! Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution is a 2020 American documentary following young Deaf and disabled activists who smashed barriers by fighting for legislation that demanded equal rights. This film will change the way you think about access, action, and equity. Watch the film any time between now and 15 July, then join the monthly meetup session where we’ll talk about it and how we can use what we’ve learned in our arts accessibility mahi.
The full film is available for free on YouTube, and is also available on some steaming services. View the audio described film or the original film with captions available.
Registration: By 4:00pm Wednesday 8 July
Accessibility: NZSL interpreter available by request. Please let me know if you need an interpreter by Tuesday 7 July.
Wednesday 12 August, 1:00pm–2:00pm
Monthly Meetup: Accessibility policy
An accessibility policy can be an expression of creativity, a roadmap, a commitment, and an inspiration. If 'policy' strikes fear in your heart, let's talk about it, and break down the barriers to getting started. Join a discussion about how organisations big and small, from single-person operations to national organisations, can develop an accessibility policy that embeds your accessibility work, prevents access from being cut or lost, and lays a framework for growth and development.
Registration: By 4:00pm Wednesday 5 August
Accessibility: NZSL interpreter available by request. Please let me know if you need an interpreter by Tuesday 4 August.
Future online hui sessions
- 16 September, 1:00pm–2:00pm – Guest Q&A
- 14 October, 1:00pm–2:00pm – Webinar
- 18 November, 1:00pm–2:00pm – End-of-year Celebration
Details and registration links will be added closer to each session.
Drop-in learning sessions
Starting in April, monthly drop-in sessions offer practical, focused learning for Network members working in arts organisations.
These drop-in Zoom sessions will include 20-30 minutes of 'how-to' information from Katie, and the rest of the hour will be open for questions. Sessions focus on general arts accessibility projects, resources and concepts and are designed specifically for Network members working in arts organisations. These sessions are designed to answer common questions and share useful tools in a collective space.
When: Each session includes a short deep dive from Katie, followed by open Q&A. These sessions are designed to answer common questions and share useful tools in a collective space.
Accessibility: These sessions will not have NZSL interpreters unless otherwise noted. There is no need to register. Click the link to join at the scheduled time.
Upcoming drop-in sessions
Thursday 2 July: Find your language - describing an accessible space or event
How do you accurately describe the accessibility of your space or event? When you say 'accessible', what does that really mean? Explore what words to use and avoid, and tips on keeping your language up to date. Learn to balance describing how the space or event is accessible and who you want to come along, without accidentally excluding people by being too specific or focusing on impairment.
Thursday 6 August: Create a visual guide
Tips for developing a comprehensive guide that uses photos and text to share key accessibility information about your space or event.
Future drop-in sessions
- 10 September: Accessible marketing (note: this session will happen the second Thursday of the month)
- 1 October: Accessible audition notices, expressions of interest and job opportunities
- 5 November: To be announced
Regional visits
