Whakahoa Whakawatea Kaitoi Tangata Holdsworth Creative Spaces Fellowship

This fellowship supports a tutor/facilitator-led project that involves artists within a creative space working collaboratively. Accessibility and inclusion will be built into the creation and the development of the project.

We are looking for projects where the creative space artists are at the centre of the process and their work is amplified. This is an opportunity to extend the values, vision and work of the creative space, exploring new ideas, possibilities, and out-of-the-box thinking. We are excited to hear from established and emerging creative spaces that are part of the Network.

Artforms include but are not limited to dance, film, creative writing, music, theatre, ngā toi Māori, Pacific arts, visual arts, ceramics and sculpture.

Arts Access Aotearoa’s aims for this Fellowship are:

• to achieve an outcome that will benefit the creative space and the artists and community it serves
• to allow the creative space to explore and test new ways of working and programmes that may lead to change in the organisation
• to have the project process and outcome documented and shared with the Creative Spaces Network as an example of best practice.

The recipient of the fellowship receives $10,000, sponsored by the Holdsworth Charitable Trust. We anticipate the project will take around 200 hours to complete within a six-month period.

This funding is to be used solely for the fellowship project and not for general creative space programming.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must currently be working in a creative space that is part of the Creative Spaces Network, facilitated by Arts Access Aotearoa.

You also need to be:

• at least 18 years of age
• a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident

You cannot have been a previous recipient of an Art Access Aotearoa Fellowship.

The fellowship money CANNOT be used for:

• Capital building works, equipment or modifications for accessibility
• a project that requires additional funding from other sources
• any academic course of study
• any competition or fundraising
• previous expenses.

It CAN be used for:

• salaries and fees
• materials
• travel required for the project
• access-related costs for the project.

The decision-making process

All complete applications that are eligible will be passed on for assessment. Proposals will be reviewed in terms of the assessment criteria. The panel of arts professionals evaluating the proposals will include at least one panelist who has participated in a creative spaces programme. An Arts Access Aotearoa staff member will support the panel but will not be involved in the assessment.

Assessment criteria

The decision-making panel will consider the following factors to evaluate each proposal:

• A carefully considered project idea that clearly articulates the accessibility focus
• The integration of creative space artists within the process
• The achievability of the project
• A clear documentation and evaluation process for the project
• A completed application.

How to apply

Step 1: Check your dates

• The deadline for applications is 5pm Monday 20 November 2023.
• All applicants will be notified about the outcome of their application by 5pm Monday 4 December 2023.

Note: The project needs to start within two months of acceptance of the fellowship and must be completed within a six-month period. We anticipate the Fellowship beginning in January/February and to be completed by June/July.

Here are some prompts to help you prepare your answers:

1. Who are you? Tell us about yourself and your experience relevant to this project.

2. What do you want to do? Describe the project you will undertake and your goals.

3. Why do you want to do this project?

4. Describe the barriers to accessibility this project will help address.

5. How will the project happen?

6. What is your timeline? How will you order each step of the process?  Have you added some flexibility to work around unexpected events or delays?

7. What is a realistic breakdown of costs (see budget template at the end of this webpage)? Consider fair pay for any other contributors.

8. How will you document and evaluate your project?

9. Who are you? Tell us about yourself and your experience relevant to this project.

10. Tell us about your role in your creative space.

Step 3: Confirm support of creative space

You will need a signed letter from your manager and a board member that makes clear your creative space understands and will accommodate the requirements of your project.

Step 4: Complete your application form

We welcome applications in alternative formats: for example, NZSL or audio/visual files.

Our application form is also a Word document, which you can fill in online and email to us.

Step 5: Gather support material

Please do not send physical copies of support material or artwork.

Support material can be emailed (no more than 5MB per email).

Larger files (up to 100MB) can be sent via WeTransfer or Dropbox.

As part of your application, you will need to include:

1. A budget showing how the $10,000 will be spent
2. A clear timeline
3.  No more than two letters of support. These need to be recent, specific to the application and include the writer’s contact details.

    

4. A signed letter of commitment from the creative space manager/board member.
