Theatre marae talks about incarceration in Aotearoa

Te Rākau Hua o Te Wao Tapu  is presenting its new work, “Out the Gate”, in nine venues around the Lower North Island, opening in Pataka Art + Museum in Porirua on 29 October and ending Massey University in Wellington City on 16 November.

Written by Helen Pearse-Otene, “Out the Gate” is theatre marae and described as “a theatrical conversation about incarceration in Aotearoa”.

Directed by Jim Moriarty with choreography by Tānemahuta Gray, “Out the Gate” is presented by an ensemble of 17 performers and followed by a facilitated kōrero. It uses movement, music and words centred around lived experience.

“Out the Gate” asks questions and provides hope, Jim Moriarty says. “It’s about hope and accountability, and expresses perspectives from people with lived experience of incarceration. Our goal is to create healing by bringing things to the light.”

Te Rākau weaves Kaupapa Māori research and theatre traditions into creating understanding and wellbeing for communities and individuals.

Recommended age 16+. Tickets: $31.70 / $15.90, including booking fee,

After Porirua, “Out the Gate” will tour across the lower North Island, for one night only, in Levin, Upper Hutt, Ōtaki, Palmerston North, Whanganui, Carterton, Wainuiomata and Te Whanganui-a-Tara..
